Just as the coronavirus outbreak was reaching New York City, Beckett Mufson, a year-old advertising executive, was ramping up his dating life after healing from a long-term relationship that had ended. In mid-March, he fled the city to live on a acre farm upstate. But he was still interested in finding potential mates. For the hourlong virtual gathering, Mr. Mufson and 11 other singles got to know one another by answering personal questions. If you could build a dream house, which weird or interesting feature would you include? What is one item that means the most to you? The singles talked as a large group before breaking into smaller conversations of four.

When I visit the Manhattan offices of Hinge on a late afternoon in September, fresh andouille sausage and red potatoes are laid out for the staff, Cajun aromas wafting through the lobby. The New Orleans theme explained the crawfish boil, which was bubbling in the reception-turned-kitchenette, and the Mardi Gras beads strewn across the office—and hanging off the back of one of the resident office dogs.

The first time I was called a serial dater was by my roommate, after I admitted to her that I had two dates set up with two different guys on the same day. The second time was when my friend Nikki failed to invite me to her movie night because she assumed I already made plans to meet up with someone from a dating app. And, keep in mind, this was long before all things coronavirus. I downloaded several dating apps and even started to interact with some of the men I found attractive on my subway commute.
This resulted in several dates. I was clear about my intentions from the start. But dating was good for my self-esteem.

Margot met Robert on a Wednesday night toward the end of her fall semester. She was working behind the concession stand at the artsy movie theatre downtown when he came in and bought a large popcorn and a box of Red Vines. He was tall, which she liked, and she could see the edge of a tattoo peeking out from beneath the rolled-up sleeve of his shirt. But he was on the heavy side, his beard was a little too long, and his shoulders slumped forward slightly, as though he were protecting something.
Robert did not pick up on her flirtation. Or, if he did, he showed it only by stepping back, as though to make her lean toward him, try a little harder. But the next week he came into the movie theatre again, and bought another box of Red Vines. After the movie, he came back to her. From that small exchange about Red Vines, over the next several weeks they built up an elaborate scaffolding of jokes via text, riffs that unfolded and shifted so quickly that she sometimes had a hard time keeping up.
He was very clever, and she found that she had to work to impress him. Then, one night during reading period, she was complaining about how all the dining halls were closed and there was no food in her room because her roommate had raided her care package, and he offered to buy her some Red Vines to sustain her. He greeted her without ceremony, as though he saw her every day, and took her inside to choose some snacks. Robert was wearing a rabbit-fur hat that came down over his ears and a thick, old-fashioned down jacket.
She thought it was a good look for him, if a little dorky; the hat heightened his lumberjack aura, and the heavy coat hid his belly and the slightly sad slump of his shoulders.

But the Chicago cafe, which could easily be mistaken for a large Starbucks, is much more than that, serving as a community hub, mostly for older people, with dozens of classes on topics like flower arranging, Egyptian history and digital safety. In her six years as a member, Pat Knazze, 66, has taken line dancing and piano lessons and participated in over 50 seminars via Skype, including architecture classes that helped her qualify as a neighborhood docent.
As she ages, Ms. Knazze has also found another expected benefit: a caring group of neighbors who serve as a kind of substitute family. Knazze, who is divorced.
